"Mid-off.")

All Winning Teams Gain Full Points H0W SIDES STAND

(By 1

Laat weok's senior cricket was remarkatle for tlie fact that each of the thxee victorious teoms scored an outright win — a rare oc- . curreace in Kawka's Bay, After heing hehind on the first innnigs Rughy scored a njeritoriovis victory at the expense of Hastings H.S.O.B, in an exciting finish. Hastings hnished coanfortahly ahead of Hnited, while Napier H.S.O.B,t a strong hatting side on paper, were most nnenterprising against Technical O.B. Leadership lias been taken over fey Teclinical Old Boys and jn the. three games to date they certainly have proved themselves a strong batting side on Napier wickets while their attack, too, have been quite irppressive. Next Saturday, however, their strength in both departments will be tested, for they will bo making tbeir first appearaaice of the season in Hastings and will iind a different type of wicket. It is interesting to note that to date tliis season the average innings in the Napier games is 174 runs while that at Hastings is 84 rujis, while the average runs for each wicket is 20.32 and 8.63 respectively. Though these figures aro • subjeeb tp considerable reservationg, they do betray a marked difference in the batting performances of teams and individuals generally. It is eignificant that only once has either Napier Old Boys or United even shade that average when visjting Cornwall jPark. With the completion of the first round it jvill be poseible to more easily and correet.ly estimate tbe respective strengthp of the competing gides and after all the championship will be decided on the points gajned from victory. Below are tables spttihg out the positiops of the teams a^jcording to points and al§o the teams' averages of runs per wicket for and against POINTS TABLE.

Rugfiy's Fine Recoyery. Fpr the seepnd time this season Iiygby have ataged a successfnl uphill light to .turn the tables and epnvert first innijigs defipiencies int0 pltjmate credjts and cpllgct maximum points by way of reward.. Uast Satyrday they repeated theiy opening performance against Hastings by tiowning the third subassociation side, Hastings H.S.O.B. and a quick job they made. of it, Tbanks largely to a gopd knock by "Bu&ter" Craike, whp carried his bai, the tail-enders made rather a good showing for the completion of tho aecond innings, though for all that Old Boys were faced with making a shade over the century to collect victory. The Rugby attack, however, met the position and thongh severai of tho ex-stu-dents stubbornly hung on to their wicikets, notably Tacon, Northe and Bherratt, the remajnder were easiiy dismissed. Sherratt py&vided quit© tlie besii batting performance, his 18 being most attraotive. The other two mentioned batted soundly, though were inclined to mistiming, Stan Craven made a, short but bright stay at the wicket, opening with a sixer and followed it with a couple of boundaries, Th© Rugby attacu was wejl handled, with Bcuth predominating as the most snqcessful trnndler. Actually Rugby appear to have the strongest attack in the competition and it is to this fao tor, rather than their batting that they Owe their present positio« in th© fight for the titfe. " " Hastings oowti United# As antjcipated in these notes, the finai wicket partnership o£ Gocdajl and Gardner for Hastings in the socond innings had a material effect, on the eventual outcome of the game. United had good reason last Saturday to regret that they had "eased up'i the previous week in the hope of avoiding having to commence their final innings at a lato hour. Elven upon resumption the pair added another 11 runs "just to rub it in." United started out disastrously but Armitage and Mat O'Brien were shaping well and they made some recovery but tliqir separation was the signal for another "landslide" ond the remainder of the wickets fell Rke ninepins under the bowling of Herb Lambert. It was altogether a dismal showing for a side that holds the record for the liigheBt innings of the season. Tech. Win Easiiy. With 40 on the board for four wickets, H, Reaney and M, Hutchinson carried on for Napier H.S.O.B. againBt 4
