MR. PHILLIP GELL
The death is recorded in the Isle of Man Weekly Times of October 8 of Mr Philip G611, a one-time r'.esident of Hawke's Bay, who passed away at Douglas, aged 77. fcJon of the late Captain Philip Gell, of Douglas, he was eflucated at Hing William's College, being a descendant of a family which produced some of the Isle of Man's most distinguished men. The late Mr Gell came to New Zealand as a young man, landing at Dunedin in 1881, having made the passage in the ship City of Auckland, afterwards wrecked on the beach at Otaki. He engaged in farming in Hawke's Bay, being closely connected with the late Mr Wm. Nelson, of Nelson Bros., Tomoana. When the Cheviot block was opened he settled in Canterbury, being one of the original settlers on the block and after farming Buccessfully he retired about 30 years ago. He was oue of Cheviot's public-minded men, and served on the first election committee of the Rt. Hon. G. W. Porbes. In the Isle of Man Mr Gell also rendered nseful service to his cOuntry and was held in the highest esteem.
