The heavy losses sustained by the New Zealand division could never have been made good but for the efforts. of those like Colonei Gibbon, who performed his nncongenial task with splendid courage and astounding energy." ' Coionel Charles Monk Gibbon, C.MG, was Director of Military Operations, and General Staff Officer of the New Zealand Military Fprcos in-April, 1914, appointed Chief of the General Staff in September, 1914, and General St-;ff Officer in 1919. He retired in 1920. \
