FEWER STRAWBERRIES

Dwindling Supplies Coming Forward PLENTY. OF CHERRIES Supplies of strawberries on the Ha» cings market are now dwindling, after a season that- has been rather shorter than usual according to a statement made ■ by a Hastings fruit merchant thip morning. The strawberries now. being received in the shops are rather small, and it is doubtful if the supply will last over the season. The opening of the season came this year with small supplies for a few, days, and then, for a week, there was a large supply of , well-grown fruit available. Following this, supplies were again reduced, and the fruit marketed was smaller. Unless rain falls, ths / season will end shortly. Prospects for the cherry season, on the other hand, are bright. The fruit has been on the market f dr about .. a fortnight, and has fallen in priee as. - the supply increased from 2/- a 1b. to 1/6 . and then to the present price of )/4. It was usual, said the informant, to gqt supplies for the latter part of December from Kumeroa, but thcrs was every prospect that the Hawke's Bay supplies would last over the Christ* mas season. In the vegetable line, a rise in ths price of green peas is due within ths next fortnight; Hawke's Bay supplies of hothouse to'matoes are coming ia, gteadily, with little prospect of a drop>. in price before Christmas, and ths ^sparagus season is almost finished, cut ting having ceased as usual at the end of last month.
