House Your Books Properly
Adjustable Shelves . The increasing popularity of flat life has evolved a type of fixrniture specially designed with an eye to obtaining the maximum of comfort in the minimum amount of space. In no single piece of furniture is this more apparent than in the bookcase — an indispensable article in this age of criticism and reading, when books and magazin.es of all coimtries play an important part in the life of the people. Very poptilar to-day is the bureaubookcase, which, besides providihg an attractive setting for books, is also fitted with a writing desk. Some of these are in beautifully grained woods, such as highly veneered walnut, Italian walnut, oak and maple. Adjustable shelves are a new and im-
portant feature of the latest combination bookcases, for they allow the housing of large encyclopaedias. Another interesting development is found in the automatic slides, which support and make rigidthe leaf of the writing desks. One particularly fine example in one of our large city stores is in highly polished walnut veneer, with two long cupboards at either end, one for rhipq and glasswar e, and the .other for books, a writing desk in the upper central part, and another cupboard for books at the bottom. This ' bookcase features the latest plain glass doors and modern door handles. No longer are palm stands or pedestals used expressly for holding pot plants, but they are so cleverly designed that they also form useful bookcases. Book troughs in many different doaigng are also gaining in popularity.
