Death from Abortion in Auckland CORONER'S COMMENT

ATJCEIjAND, Last Night. An inquest into the death of Mrs. .Norma May Brown, aged 19, who died in the' Auckland Hospital on October 28, was held bcfore Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner. Detective-Sergeant Walsh appeared for the police and Mr. Cleal .watched the proceedings on behalf of Allen Eichard Brown, labourer, Husband of deceased. Dr, Gilmour, .pathologist at the Auckland Hospital, who conducted the post mortem examination, said in his opinion death was due to septic abortion produced by some instrument. It could not have been caused by a falL Allen Eichard Brown, husband of deceased, said they were married in December, 1936. On October 18 last.; they were walking on a steep track when deceased slipped and fell. She complained of a pain. On October 24 she was ill and he called a doctor who ordered her to the hospital. In realy to Detective Walsh, witness denied that a man named Brown, "a namesake of his," visited his house and performed an illegal operation. Witness said he could not give any explanation as to how this operation was performed on his wife. Dr. Hubert Morrison said deceased told him in the hospital she had done nothing to bring on a miscarriage but' had had a fall. "All I can find is that there were two iives thrown away," said the coroner, returning a verdict that death was due to septic abortion which must have been caused by an instrument.
