Remarkable Film Taken Under the Water ANGLING PROCESS REC0RDED

LONDON, Nov. 3. • A Gaumont-British Instructional photographer, Mr. P. Smith, went down into a specially constXucted underwater observation chamber in the liiver Orwell recentiy to obtain shots of the "fish-eve" view of what takes place when a fisherman starts operations. Weeks of painstaking work have resulted in a one-minute sequence in a tilm which for the first time reveals some remarkable new angles on the art of fishing. With Dr. Ward, a well-known Ipswich fisherman, Mr. Smith took evcry possible view of what a fish might see above water, and secured a remarkable record of Avhat actually does take place below water when a trout approaches a dry-fly. The difference between a perlect cast and a faulty one is elearly revealed. The fact that fish can see people walking along a river bank, and even /obtain a distorted but quite intelligible view of what they are doing, is shown beyond dispute. "Th9 importance of taking advantnge of every possible cover while fish- ' mg has long been known to fisliermen," Mr. Smith says, "but. just how niuch a fish could actuallj' see was alAvays a problem. Some authorities maintained that the fish saw praetically nothing, but was warned of danger by vibrations caused by footsteps. "Whether vibrations play any part or not in the matter is of no concern now we have demonstrated so effectually tliat fish can see. Our observations and actual photographs show that a wily old river fish actually appears to keep a. sharp look-out for enemies on tlie river banks. "The difference between a good and a Bad casx, is shown*:in practice when a trout quiekly moves off on -seeing a badly disgiiised hook. • This is sbown in the. film."
