TIGER GAIN REPEATS

(Sp'ecial to Herald-Tribune.)

Second Success in Manchester Handicap FORM AT FEILDING

FEILDING, Saturday. , Form worked out fairly well on tha openiiig day at Feilding, wkere racing was co.uducted under ideal conditions. Tiger Gain repeated last year's per.formance to win the Manchester Handicap, and the Gisborne sprintert Mata Il'ari, improved on Napier Park-running tu capture the sprint from Wildflower. Hastings stables were xepresente.d in four races and won two events, the hurdles with Journet and the main race ■ with. Tiger Gain. The totalisator handled £20,259 10/-, compared with £17,072 10/- on the opening day last year. Journet won the liurdle race very easily, running up to the leaders at the last fenee and beating Round Score and the pacemaker^ Top Hat, on tho flat. The winner was a class above the otkers. Round Score was badly mterfered with when Lacquer blundered at the fence in front of the stands, but it mnde no difference to his chance with the winner. Riotous finished on strongly from a rear position, but Even Money failed to run up to Levin form. Lacquer, liaving her lirst race over hurdles, jum'ped greenly, but stuck to her task very gamely, and appears likely to inake rapid improvement. Red Oat TJsefuL Red Cat, an Iliad filly, having her second start only, w;on 4he Aorangi' Trial Plate all the way. She dropped Noisy Night at the last furlong, then held off Amatory and Alloa, the latter, having to cover much ^xtra ground. Aria was a poor fourth. Red Cat is. smart like her dam, Black Cat, who' was a good two-year-old as long as sher lasted. Amatory has a ba-d dishing action and may not improve so inuch og some of th^ others. S. Wilson got Alloa away reasonably well, and he should have been second, but it is' unlikely that he would have troubled the winner. Noisy Night will be improved with the experience. Brazen King Unlucky. O Tiger Gain rau one of the best races of his career to repeat last year's performance and win the Manchester Handicap,. He made all the pace with. Corroboree, whom he shook off a furxong from honie and then vfithstood a oetermined challenge from Brazen King, t\> win by a long head. Brazen King waa a little unlucky. He drifted early a,nd was last but one at the half-mile. He then commenced to move up and oustained his run very gamely, but the extra ground he had to cover cost him clie race. The Buzzer was being hara ndden at the horne turn where he was nampered for room, but he did not .espond very generously. Hazoor, although fourth, never looked likely and Taitoru was one of the first horses beaten but he may soon improve. Mata Hari was soon in front in the: Flying Handicap, making the pace from Relative^ Clessamor, Deficit and Wildflower. Mata Hari won comfortably,' Wildflower beating Relative horne for second money. Clessamor and Deficit tlropped out at the horne turn, where Lady Ina had to eome 'wi.de out. She may improve on Tuesday as she received a cheek to-day when Clessamor shiftod ground and sent her back. Raratonga Beats Minga. JRaratonga, a Philamor colt, stayed on a little too' well for Minga, the favourite, in the Juvenile' Stakes. These. two made all the pace well clear of the others, and Raratonga got a half-head verdict only in the last stride. Toa-iti was the best of the others. Merry. Simon was pinched back at the start and ran greenly. Dunmanway finished on well and, like the Lofd Warden breed, is evidently a stayer and may need time. Altho-ugh Hunting Queen won the Kowhai Hack Handicap on her merits, Middle was a certainty beaten. Seventh at the kome turn, he tried to push up between Galteemore and Naughty Marietta and ran for nearly a furlong locked between these two before he got clear. Meanwhile; Hunting Queen was sailing for horne and Middle failed to gather her by a neck only. Bonny Glow was always in or near the lead and hung on well for third with Galteemore, Ngatirahiri ar,d Ned Cuttle right up. Imposture faded out after being prominent early. With anything like a deCent, run Middle would have won, but at the same timo S. Anderson induced Hunting Q'iieen to go much more ldndly than she has done in any other race she has had this season. A Smart Performance, Florence Mills made her racing record two starts and two wins when she began smartly, led all the way and

decisively defeated a good field of haeks in the Fitzroy Handicap. Florence Mills is likely' to deVelop highclass form, and should make a fine stayer. "She has brilliant early speed and at the' finish of to-day 's xace was striding along comfortably while all the others were flat but but making no impression on - her. Silver River was always secoud, and Great Hope and Race Call were nearest to the two leaders throughout. Captain Treville was never a possibility. Vadanoe and Hias should benefit from the race. Airipg won the open welter all. the way, but had to survive an inquiry i'nto alleged- interference with the sdcond horse, One Whetu. It appeared that the trouble was as much due to One Whetu hanging in as to iany misdemeanour by Airing. Considering it was his first race of the . season One Whetu wekt well' and he should not be long in winning a race. Gay Boy Showed improvement on Levin form to get third. Lady Kyira's effort was only fair, and Padishah was never a prospect. Lone Raider was a surprising favourite after his poor race at Levin, and to-day he Tan no better.
