COLOURFUL SCENES
New Zealand's Scenic Charms "The purpose in publishiiig this book is to show Uow closely rdlated are the scenic attjraetions of New Zealand and the national trdnsportation flyBtem," states Mr G. H. Mackley, General Hauager of the Bailways Department, iu the introductory page of "New Zealand Railways IlluStrated," a book of eightyfour royal-quarto pages. With fourcolour reproductions of seventy-one scenic photographs, sevtu railway subjects and maps of the North and South Island on high-quality art paper, this book is New Zealand 's biggest achievemcnt in colour printing. In the selection of scenic pictures justice has been done to the prineipal tourist localities; the North Island has thirty-four pages and the South Island thirty-seven. Therd is just enough letterpress to help the pictures to intensify their message. One page gives a concise summary of New Zealand — history, geography, population and other information — and another page briefly tells the story of the railways since the first line was opeued in 1863.
