Flames Sweep Forest on Six-Mile Front FANNED BY STRONG WIND

(Received 27, 11.25 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 27. Greafc damage was doiie by a bush ire which. swept through the forestson a six-mile front near Alacedon and was spreading rapidly at an early hour this morning. Upper Macedon townfihip was threatened when a strong wind sprang up and the flames tore through the thick acrub towards the township. Over 200 volunteers are fighting the fire, which at two o'clock this morning was threatenilig the magiiificent hoiiies on Mount Macedon, including that of the Attorney-General, Mr. Menzies. Mrs. Menzies and her four children abandoned their home and sought refuge in the Macedon golf-hduse. A number of fire-tighters collapsed and were carried to safety. Ohe women was rescued with her clothes alight. Later this mOrning it was leared that Upper Macedon was faced with total destruction it the stroncr wiiid edtttintied. The Menzies family, includiug Mrs. Mehzies's sister, evacuated their house in their iiight attire. The district forest superiiitendent said that in liis opinion tlie Are near Mkcedoh had been started deliberately. , It was the pfactice of some persoiis to set fire to portions of the forest so that the yoiihg grass Which foliowed the fife Would p'rovide good gfuzing. The fire, which started at ndOn on ThUrsday, did not caiise serious alarm until yesterday, when a freshening wind whipped the flames.
