Royal Mimic May Start on Monday PROMISING SORTS

(From

AUCKLAND, Last Night. Te Maranui, runner-up. to Awatea Priucess at Paeroa last month, is to contest the Vauxhall Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday, this eveut being confined to horses that kave not won a race worth £50 to the winnef. Other winnbrs engaged are Peter's Penee and Tahae Mea. Gay Hussah would have finished in the money at Te Hapa last Monday but for running very wide at the home turn. This Australian-bred two-year-old has improved since joining A. Cook's stable recently, and he is a possibility for place money at his next appearance, which will probably be at Ellerslie on Monday. Rollicker ran two excellent races last week-end, and even in open company in the future he will win good races. Under 9.7 he carried along the big Haclc Cup field this week until well into the straight, his paee under this weight being a feature of this excellent contest. Rollicker ought to do well over a middle distance, and ke will probably be given the opportunity at Ellerslie at the summer fixture. Kilberis revealed marked improve•ment when Iio finished third in the liurdle race on the final day at Waikato, and if he is produced at Ellerslie on Monday he will not lack support. He went straight and true at his hurdleS, and it now looks as if he will be a force to be reckoned with in jumping races. Tlie success of his stable mate, Bryce Street, in the SteepleiJhase, was well received. This was tho flfst win scored by this gelding, who, while failing on the flat, was being roferred to as the ideal type for jumping, Guide to Hurdles. Royal Mimic and Collision were very ppmxsing hurdlers thgt wero brought i>orth for the. winter meetings last season, the latter. fulfilling expectations on the. trip. However,. Royal Climie met with minor injuries and could not be started, but lio is back again, gnd it is expected that he will contest the Kawau Hurdles on Monday. It will be reniembered ikat he was the stable selection for the last Great Northeru Hurdles, which suggested tfiat he was mu'ch superior to Collision. Oue of the best eft'orts scen pn- a raceeourse of late months was that registered by Parquet in winning the Hack Cup this week. She was hope-' lessly placed half a mile from hocne, for not only A/as she last, but she had the big field well ahead of her at that

stago. She did not appear on the sceno until near the finish, when she came very fast wide out and won by a head. This effort indicated that Parquet will win handicaps provided she can overcome her early sluggishness. This was her first win since aho scored at two years, twico in the Auckland district and once at Warwick Farm, where she defeated Wykeham, Rembrandt, Young Idea and Legatee. Mondays success put Parquet out of hacks. The reeent dual success of the two-year-old Bright Wings indicated that she has all the speed of her dam, White Wings, who is a sister to the N.Z. Derby winner Agrion and the A.J.C. Metropolitan victor Waikgre. Bright Wings is by Vaals, who can get them fast, and it will be interesting to see if she can stay better than her dam, .who did best over short distances. This filly claims an engagoment in the Foal Stakes on Boxing Day, and as she is susceptible to con, siderable improvement it will be interesting to see how she rates with the best. Bright Wings may be given a run at Ellerslie next Monday, and she inay be very hard to beat. A horse that came home very fast in the Waikato Harck Cup was Kena, who just failed to reach the third horse in that . fine contest, being not more than a length behind tho winner. Keua claims an engagement in tho hack lilile at Ellerslie on Monday, in wkich the class is a good deal below thit met with earlier this week. The Musketoon gelding has not done a great deal of racing, and he is, therefore, all the better for U, Suleiman's Form. There werp a number of minor mishaps reported on the eve of the Waikato meeting, among them being Royal lviinstrel and Ouleiman, neither of ' which started on the opening day, The latter was produced on Monday, and he made a bold showing under ■difficulties, for he struck tronble at the start and then revealed a lot' of pace to be one of the leaders around tlie home ■ turn. Suleiman lost no friends by his i display, for -the lack of a rousing gal- ' lop prior to this event found hiin 1 whnting when the pressure was ap- , plied. There is a chance that Suleiman • will be produced in the sprint next Monday at headquarters. When he finished fourth the first day, Trilliarch was regarded as a good proposition in the sprint last Monday, but contary to previous practice he was talten to the front and led into the straight, failing to run on. His best torts have bcen made when asked to c ne from the back, and indeed he has been ratber sluggish in his races, so it was astonigh'ng to see liim getting to the front so soon. Tt is probable that Trilliarch will do better next time out and more patiently handled.
