"PERRY LET US DOWN"
A TENNIS COMPLAINT ABSENCE CAUSED BIG LOSS OF GAXE MONEY I. ■» \ Tilden and his fellow professionals felt that they had been badly let down by Fred Perry and Ellsworth Vines, who declined the invitation to compete in the lawn tennis event at Wembley, which was proclaimed as the championship of the world. The absence of * the two stars undoubtedly affected the gate receipts, and robbed the players, it was said, of several hundreds of pounds. Perry would have been a big .attraction, but he and Vines were here in the summer, and they were not prepared to pay another visit. Perry is now a business man, striving to get all that is possible out of the game, and moreover, as q.uickly as possible. I understand that he and Vines are partners in a club in Hollywood, and they are so busy making money that they could nqt spare the time to come to London. Financially, it was not worth their while. It is not the intention of Perry to remain longer in the game than he fqpls is necessary. Already lie has far exceeded his expectations when he turned professional, and it is quite likely that in two years he will be back permanently living in London. He has been offered a most attractive directorship with one of the largest sporting equipment firms, the post being open to him when he is ready to fill it.
