AMERICAN BOXERS OFPONENTS FOR ANTIPODES TITLE-HOLDERS. A couple of seasons ago the Australian boxing promoter Lucas endeavoured to bring the American welterweight champion Barney Ross to Australia to meet the title-holder there, Jack Carroll, but the arrangement was wrecked on the rock of finance, Ross wanting more than the promoter was prepared to guarantee. Carroll was taken ill subsequently and has had only one fight in two years. He entered the ring again last Saturday in the first of a series of strenuous contests which had been arranged for him by the Lucas-Munro syndicate, his opponent being Dick Humphries. Ross* opponent next month, (DecCmber) will be an American, Izzy Jannazzo, whose last bout in America was with Ross, the man it was desired to bring to the Antipodes two years ago and 'who is still t'he reigning champion in the States. Jannazzo, who was beaten by Ross on points, passed through Auckland this week on the Aorangi under the management of one Guy Anselmi, and two other American boxers, Tom CheEler and Lou Farber were in the team. Jannazzo, who is to meet Carroll in Sydney on December 21, recently broke all records by fighting three 15round first-class bouts in three weelcs. In the first he siopped the German, Gustav Eder, who had punched his way to the front rank by three straight knock-out wins. A match with the Filipino, Ceferino Garcia followed, resulting after a great battle in a draw. The winner was to have fought Barney Ross for the world championship and Garcia had the privilege by virtue of his superior ranking. He was unable to take the opportunity, however, owing to the great punishment he had received, and Jannazzo took his plaee in tfie ring. The result was one of New York's fastest punching, fastest moving encounters, Ross gaining a close decision. The young Italian-Ameri-can is keen to eliminate Carroll, Leto and Garcia, so as to earn another title bput with Ross, his trainer stated. Tom Chester, the middle-weight member of the team, is a coloured boxer engaged to meet Ron Richards in Australia. At one point in his career Chester just missed an encounter with Joe Louis. Both were engaged in a light heavy-weight tourney and Louis was eliminated by a boxer whom Chester ' defeatecl. The third member of the trio, Lou Farber, the well-known featherwoight, is to meet Mickey Miller, the Auscralian champion. Work-out in Port. .While the Aorangi lay at berth in Auckland the three boxers had a light work-out under the eye of Mr. Anselm. Jannazzo, who is 22 years old, is unscarred by four years of professional .boxing, He is a picture of what a boxer should be, with his big frame and long, finely-muscled limbs. Close on 6ft., he is unusually tall for a welter-weight, yet carries plenty of weight where it is needed. Punching the bag and .shadow sparring, he showed speed and power. Farber is of stocky build, and impressed by the weight and speed of his punch in his work-out on the Aorangi. Each of the two is booked for three matehes in Australia.
