ONE OF THE GREATEST MILE RUNNERS
W EWrTATIQN TO SIDNEY WOOOERSON '
Contrary to the general belief in athletics, Sidney Wooderson, wonder mile runner, means to go to Australia after all for the British Empire Games — a change of plan which is very pleasing, says an English writer. The Australians are anxious to see him at Sydney in February, but it is England who most needs him there, because the little record-breaker is as near a certainty as can be for his event. The obstacle in the way of the trip was Wooderson's intention to sit for the solicitors' final examination next June. He is a solictor's clerk anxious to improve his profesSional prospects. However, Wooderson was longlng to run in the Games, his employer told him it would be a grand experience for him if he went to Australia, Albefct Hill, his coach, advised him to go, qnd his family did likewise. So Wooderson is thinking of taking his examination in October instead and going on a tour which will last four months. One or two points remain to be settled, but it looks as if we shall have a better team in the Empire Games than was expected. For. in addition to Wooderson, Peter Ward, who is a stockbroker in the City, now says he will join the party. Ward, too, has his business interests to consider, but expects to be in a position to accept his invitation within a week. Lean-limbed Ward, with his long, even stride, is a smashing performer over three miles. B. Roberts, quartermile champion, who nCver finds it easy to break f ;vay from his work, is also going, so England should be good for three .titles^ at anv rate, .
