SUDDEN RAINSTORM

Our Own Correspondent.)

Heavy Downpour at Waipukurau

(From

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Out of a dull, overcast sky, heavy rain began to fall about noon yesterday and continued steadily throughout the afternoon and all night. The weather early this morning, however, was fine and warm, with a clear sky, and gave every promise of a: hot summer day. It was with some surprise, therefore, that a heavy downpour of rain about 10 a.m. was received. The rain continued all day- and did not cease until this evening. There was a noticeable drop in temperature, the day being one of tho coldest for a conslderable time. ' Occaiional gusts of wind added to the unpleasantness. The sudden rain this morning caught most people in town unprepared. Few had coats, and a sudden seattering'for shelter was f ollowed by heavy demands on Taxi drivers who, with farmers, are generally supposcd to welcome downpours of Tain. With shearing under way on a number of farms in the district, the rain was regarded by faTmers generally as something of a mixed bleBsing, for it caused interruption of seasenal work. But the shower was useful insofar as it revived pastures and was beneficial to gardens. The rain was of a steady, soaking nature. " Between 9 a.m. yesterday and" 9 a.m. to-day 57 points was registered in Waipukurau, ahd the fall since 9 a.m. was considerable.
