Anti-Eviction Clause in the; Finance Bill - HOUSE-AGENTS' OPINION ; i
(By Teleernph-
WELLINGTON, Last Night. ! A special meeting. of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Real Estate lnstitute was heldi this? moming to discuss the clause in the Finance Bill providing that landlords who require their tenants to quit rented houses must make arrangements for alternative accommodation for them. The branch president, Mr. F. G. Williamson, issued a statement in which he said that the effect 0f the legislation would appear to be considerably more far-reaching than was intended. He thought it would prejudjce rather than assist the very class of person it was intended to assist, because every liouse property, on becoming vacant, would inevitably remain vacant until" a sale could be effected. In the same way, a new house erected primarily for letting would now be kept vacant until it was sold, as it was obvious that, onco let, it could not be sold. The' measure woiild als.o be a deterrent against any further building except by intending owner-occupiers. He suggested that before the Bill had its third reading it'should be referred to a eommittee of the House to take evidence and aseertain the .real effect.
