MUNICIPAL THEATRE
"THE DEFENBE RESTS" AND "EIGHT BELLS." "The Defence Rests,'' which heads the new programme at the Municipal Theatre, is a powerfully told and dramatic revelation" of the court-room exploits ot a brilliant, sensation-seeking criminal lawyer. Jack Holt is seen in the role ofa Matt Mitchell, the astute lawyer, and the characterisation he presents is one of the high spots of the current cinema season. Nevertheless, one of his ardent admirers in the graduating class, ably porbrayed by Jean Arthur, wins an appointment as his private secretary, and her first official . act is to roundly berate Mitchell for his unethical condtict in criminal cases. When Holt attempts to defend an obviousty guilty kidnapper, Miss Artlurr undertakes a bit of privato sleuthing on her' own, and compromises the lawyer into a more scrupulous attitude towards his work. What happens when a beautiful debutante stoWs away aboaid a dirty Ohina-bound frpighter manned by eixty seamen, is excitingly revealed in "Eight Bells," . the Columbia midocean drama which is the second feature. Ann Sothern is featured as a shipping magnate's he'adstrong daughtor. John Buckler and Ralph Bellamy enact the leading male roles.
