Mr L. j. Kiddie, of Nelson, who has been on a visit to Hastings, his former home town, returned south by the mail train this morning. Mr A. W. Packard, a senior member of the literary staff of the Christchurch Press, has been appointed chiefof -staff of the Press, in succession to Mr C. H. Williams. Mr W. Greening, of Havelock North, left to-day on a visit to Wellington to confer with the ehairman of the Bureau of Industry regarding the development of sugar beet industry. Mr G. Muntz, of His Majesty's Trade Commissioner 's Office, will proceed to the United Kingdom on leave early in the New Year prior to transfer to a post in Europe. Mr N. S. Falla, managing director of fhe Union Steam Ship Company, left England on November 3 by the Normandie for New York. He intended to connect with the Niagara, arriving at Auckland on December 13. Mr H. Tillman has been appointed chief mechanical engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board, He will fill the vaeaney caused by the retirement of Mr A. S. Forrester- Mr Tillman has been in the service of the board for 29 years. Mr Frederick Wilding, of Christchurch, a former New Zealand and county cricketer and a New Zealand doubles tennis titlc-holder, received many congratulations on his eighty-fifth birthday last Saturday. Mr Wilding, who was made a K.C. in 1913, was a founder of Lancaster Park and one of the original members of th'e Canterbury Lawn Tennis Club.
