NOTES AND COMMENTS

"The Barb ")

Mr A. E. Wishart, secretary of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club> has gone intO parlnership With Mr Ken BaylisS, accountant, and from now on the office and committee-rooru of the elub will be ili Queen street, Hastings, and those at the tea-kiosk on the cOUrse. to which rocourss was taken ai'ter the Markot street offices were destroyed by the big 'quake, will be closed. • s. » The Lord 'Quex — Agreeablo mare Amiable, owned by Mr W. It. Kembull, must be a gallop'-r of distinction. for the field slic 1,-eut on Haturday at Caulfleld included rmea of rhe most brilUant in Aystralia. ch; as Pamelus and Beechwood. This is a further feather in the cap of ihe Hastings she whn ean now claini to have begotten over

two hundred individual winners^ prob-1 ably something of a record for eithef the Dominion or Australia, « # ' o ' Owner-tr'ainer Mr (1. P» Haldane had little more than a "joy ride', to Hamilton last week. He was indeed unlucky in that he cotild not start Royal Minstrel at the meeting, as there was Some rather valuable prize-nioney offering and for the first day at any rate his entry was very favourably handicapped to secure some of it. « . # • Blue Tiger, the other Hastings candidate at Te Iiapa, won the only race he contested, beilig scratched from first-day hurdle engagement. He will remain up north for the Takapuna meeting next Saturday and Monday, and it is quite on the • c.ards that he will not be brought back here until after the A.B.C. summer meetiug. * * * The ssmall tearn that went to Leldn from here did fairly well, scoring tyfO v/ins and a minor placing. « a * Taro ;s failure in the seven-f urlong haek race was not surprising. In fact it was more of a surprise that he was started, as for some time he had been a sick horse and under the vet, * * « Gironde ran disappointingly, as his third at Napier Fai'lt ovef a niile made the seven furlongs on .Saturday look like providing the Gascony gelding with an ideal chance. However, he failed to get into the money in a weak field. b • , * * Geira succeeded in winning the fivefurlong fiutter from another Hastingstrained candidate in Lindrum. The winner showed a great deal of speed and, though winning by half a length only, was going comf ortably at the finish, so that the narrow margm might easily have been increased. It will be recalled that at Masterton Geira and Lindrum dead-heated over five furlongs so that as between the two consistency was shown. ,The long straight at Masterton was perhaps not in Geira 'S favour. 4 * 4 Reference has already been made in a short special article to gallant old Slippery 's win, as the writer was of the opinion that he wa® entit.led to one by himself. « * • Mr • W. R. (Bob) Stead has a fine bay filly by Beau Pere from the Thespian mare Drama running in a paddock at Hastings. Many offers have been made for the yearling, but so far no business has resulted and in all probability Mr Stead will have her catalogued for the next Trentham yearling saies. • • 4 Mr Stead also purchased la®t January a filly by Beau Pere from Rapide (dam- of the good galloper Speed), but at a good profit he handed her on to Mr F. J. ("Peter") Douglas., wh» will shortly place her in work with J. M. Cameron, along with The Eing (Siegfried-— Gay Salute), who has just reeovered from a cold. m m m

Many astute judges have had a look at Mrs M. E. Flatcher's yearling colt by Siegfried from a sister to Sunee (Australian Sun — Bunee) and the general opinion is that he is one of the finest yearling® seen m Hawke's Bay for many years. Size, quality and good bone are noticeable and it is safe to say that he will realise a good figure when put under the hammer next. January at Trentham. J • * • Contact, who has been spelling at Waimarama for some time. is back in his old box at W. D. Young's. He has thiekened out considerably and now looks an ideal cut of a hurdler, but unfortunately he has respiratory trouble, # « Oha (Coekpit— Gazelie) has now been taken over by Young and impresses as one likely to win ere very long. tlntil recently this mare was trained by A. E. Jones, who appears to have quitted her a little too soon, / © © © Journet, Begorrah, Top Hat, Lacquer, Limbohm, Tiger Gam. Merry Simon, Parry and Padishah will ptobably be the team representijig local stables at Feilding next Saturday and Tuesday. Fctesicker, it is said, is not likely to make the trip. * * • Journet is very fit and in the hurdles looks in a class by bimself, but the very small track may give the others a better ehance with the big gelding. # # * Mr A. W. Meikle will probably start both Lacquer and Begorrah, but not on tke samo day, the present intention being to give eaeh just the one ruu. Begorrah 's form is too recent to require recalling. So far, however, Lacquer has not been raced over hurdles, but. b^ing a well-grown maTe with plenty of pace, fike eertainly looks the part. When iiolidaymaking out on her owner's farm at Mangateretere she was given several schooling lessons by Mr Meikle and sbowed distiiict jumping ability. ' 4 » * ■

Top Hafc won at Hastings early this month, but at Napier Park took all ihe. steam out of himself by clouting fcho last fence vt-ry hard wheu looking likely to tako part in the Close finish. He will thus have to be considered at Feilding. # 4 • Limbohm was a surprising second at Napier Park, running much better than expected, wbile others ran deeidedly below form and aiiticipations, so perhaps that placing may be misleading. However, he has improvefi since Napier Park. iS ^ Tiger Gain won the Manchester Handieap l'ast year and, handicapped this ycar on the 7.7 marlc. reads very well placed. Taking a line through tlie handicapping of Royal Minstrel and Tiger Gain at Hastings and Royal Minstrel and Limbohm (Tiger Gain's stablemato) at Napier Park Tiger Gain is now handicapped 011 241bs. better terms tlian he was at Hastings, thus

suggeStiug that one of the weightframers has been wrong, as Tiger Gaiti did not start at Hastings or since. * # 4 In the juvenile event Merry Simon will find a tough one to down in Minga, who ran third to Gay Son and Surmount in the W.R.O. Wellesley Stakes, whlld among the also-starteds was the neW five-fUrlOng rCCord-holder, Amigo. & 4 « Parry 's form of Ikte ha® been a little disappointing. He is a bit of a puzzlej is this geldingj as he looks a hundred per cent. better horse than ho did some little "time back, but is not. raclng iietirly Us well. Thei'e have been' a great inaliy o'f Loi'd Qtxex's pfogeny who raced" better when looking on the ragged side and possibly he may be anotlier to be added to that list. » w m Padishah is engaged in the sevenf ■ urlong welters. A slow beginner on * a small turning track. Padishah, does not read a good uetting proposition on this tour, but a surprise may be iu store. =ss ss # Wilful Lady, who was oue of the tri,o' that fell at Napier Park, appears to; have come on a bit of late and her next outing will be in the maiden events at! the Woodville summer meeting on December 11 and 13. « » # Haile Selassie, tho three-quarter brother to Sir Nigel, is going on the, right way and, though he was a bit ofa joke not so long ago on the Hastings tracks, is not so to-day. He looks in , apple-pie order to win a novice event scon and in all probabiiity will have his next p'ublic outing at Woodville. * * « Nelumbo from the same ownertrainer 's establishment has freshened up a lot'of late and appears in something like her old form. Bhe should iiot ba long ere k-ading another hack sprint field, home. « # 4 V. H. Collelo's ' ' appla of his eye," the Siegfried — Liaison two-year-old colt, is going along most pleasingly. If ever a voungster looked a racehorse it is this ' colt of Messrs Pharazyn and Greenwood 's. He will probably not race until the late summer or early autumn and, if he then fulfils expectations. he will be prepared for the A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbies. • 4 4 Joe Louis is enjoying a spell somewhere near Taihape, where he will remaih until January or February. • » « Lady Chat is again a daily visitor to the Hastings tracks, looking but little the worse for woar. Her near engagenients have not been definltely determined, but she Is most likely to have her next race at Woodville, after which she may be prepared for the Manawata Cup or perhaps race at the Auckland Cup meeting. * • • Shu has been turned ottt and it is very unliiely that he will be tried again. He _will in all probabiiity from now on be used as a hack on his owner's ranch. • • • Bruhhilde iooks all the better for her racing at Trentham and Riccarton. Nothing definite has been arranged spent her summer programme, but more than likely it will be Manawatu and Wairarapa, not Ellerslie. 4 4 4 Master Cyklon is ano.ther Hastings horse that has benefited by the race he had at Napier Park. His owner. Mrs. F. Goodman, of Napier, has an excellent chance of collecting the valuable trophy that goes with the Woodville Bolton Handieap on Deeember 11.
