Full-time Labour To Be Released

WELLINGTON, Last Nigbt. An assurance tbat every effort would be made to supply suitable labour for farmers during tbe hay-inaking season, was given by tbe Prime Minister, Et. Hon. M. J. Savage, in reply to an urgent question asked by Mr A. G. Hultquist (Bay of Plenty— Government) in tbe House of Eepresentatives to-day. • Information as to wbetber tbe Government was taking appropriate steps in tbe country districts tp ensuro that farmers would be supplied witli labour for their haymaking operations, was sou^lit by Mr Hultquist. "Hay-making will commence shortly in Poverty Bay and other districts,"' sair Mr Hultquist. "At present, arrangements are being made for tlie retention of . men placdd in . employment by the Government with local bodies, and in addition to employment _ of a large number of extra men. It is desirable that farmers requiring, labour for hay-making should not be overlpoked in any 'arrangements made witb local bodies." • Mr Savage : said • it- was suggested •tbat farmers requiring labour for- haymaking sbould . not'ify theijr reqtiirements in advance ; to tbe Employment Bureau so tbat. arrangements could be made to allocate tbe labour wben reauired.

"Tbe object of fihe special' full-time local body works is to provide tempora,ry. full-time employment. for men for whom no ordinary employment is off ering," added Mr Savage. "If tbere. is insufficient - unemployed labour available "to meet tbe seasonal requirements of farmers," men employed on theso works will-. be allocated to seasonal work. ' Tbe Publie Works Department adopts a . similar .policy by arra,nging for tbe temporary xelease of its -workers for farm .work, sucb as. hay-making, sbearing'and tbe life."
