Labourer Given Reformative Detention NAPIER COURT CASE 3?or obtaining £15 from Louis Corbett, aa Auckland radio dealer, by false pretences, James Henry - Deana, labourerj aged 29, was sentenced to two years 5 Teformative detention by'Mr J. Miller, S.M., in the Napier Magistrate's Gourt this morning. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon f or tbe tbeft of 10/4 tbe property of G. F. Mannering, tbe tbeft of five blank cbeque foxms from Lineham and Wolfgramm (Auckland), obtaining 25/- from Mrs A Beamish by false pretences, and obtaining £5 credit by fraud, also from MTs Beamish. Accused * pleaded guilty to all charges, • Police Evidence. Detective-Sergeant H. - Nuttall said tbat, up to November 5, accused was employed as a car greaser by Linebam and Wolfgramm, motor engineers, Auckland. He left without giving notice and got manied at Devonport on November 6. He rang Corbett, a radio dealer, saying tbat be bad received. a £20 cbeque as a wedding present and geked Corbett to casb it and take £5 out of it as*a deposit on a radio set. _ Deans called at tbe sffiop and told Corbett tbat tbe cbeque was at bis boarding-house in Hobson street and Corbett gave bim £0 in casb and a cbeque fot £6. On Sunday accused casbed tbe £6 cbeque at Devonport and left Auckland on November 8 lor Napier with bis wife. They stayed at tbe Delta house, under tbe name of Mr and Mrs J. A. Brown. He told tbe prorietress, Mrs Beamiab, tbat be bad a. cbeque signed by bis employers, Linebam and Wolfgramm, for £20 for -wages. He said be bad put tbe cbeque into tbe National Bank, Napier for collectioa. Wife Was Mislead. Accused misled bis wife to believe tbat tbis was so, and tbe pair went to tbe bank where accused tried to persuade tbe officers tbat be bad put a cbeque in for collection. Prior to leaving bis employment at Auckland be stole five blank cbeques from tbe office. None of tbem bad been presented. On November 15 he left for Palmerston North by tbe 4.30 jtrain, stealing lu/4 from tbe pocket of & f Allnw-bnarder before he left tbe bouse. He incurred £5 credit by fraud from Mrs Beamisb, and 25/- by false pretences. v Tbe detective-sergeant .said tbe_ accused bad been known to bim for eiglht years, during which. time be bad been before Court on several occasions xor tbeft and false pretences. Commenting on accused's record, tbe Magistrate said it appeared. tbat neither probation nor imprisonment had bad mueh effect, tberefore be would leave tbe matter to tbe Prisons Board and impose 2 years' reformative detention.
