SATURDAY CRICKET Third Series Opens of Competition WICKETS HEAVY Another century was scored in the senior grade inter-town cricket competition on Saturday afternoon when D. Rees, of Technical 03. compiled his iirst three-figure score in senior cricket. This was in the thiid. series- of games for the season and generally the scoring was on the low side. In the junior grade three centuries were ed.Playing areas were rather on the'' heavy side, following rain the previous day, and cohditions favoured bowlers. Two games were played at Hastings, and in each match all teams coinpleted at least oue innings. Hastings H.S.O.B.,- thanks to a brightly cpmpiled 52 by Graven, established a lead of 14 runs "on the first - innings against Rugby? who were dismissed for 90 runs. The latter, in the second innings, have lost ' seven wickets fof 81 runs. In the .other senior fixture at Cornwall Park, Hastings have been successful inri securing an advantage of 52 runs on the first innings, making 114 as against United's reply of 62. In their second innings Hastings have lost nine wickets for 100 runs. One game was played' at Nelson Park, Napier, and there Technical 01« Boys compiled • 248 against Napier H.S.O.B., these two teams at present leading the competition. The outstand.ing performance was that of Rees, who made 101 before being cauglit out. Old Boys have lost f our wickets for 4fi runs in reply.
a century was inade .by McDowell, Hastings High School, his tally being 103, while two centuries in the Napiei junior a division were scored by Dean and Fox, of Napier High, who made 107 ^and 103 respectively, in a total score of 344 for seven wickets. Old Boys. At the end of the day's play they had 344 runs to their credit for the loss of seven wickets (Fox 103, Deau" 107, Coutts 49/ Tringhar 30, Cummins -14, Templeton 10, and J. Stevens 17 not out). United A v. Scinde.— Playing United A Scinde went in first and made 201 (Moss 59, Graham 52, Greaney 21 not out, Clements 19, Jordan 14; Wilson three for 44, Seed three for 56, and Stevens three for 29). At stumps United had lost four wickets for 50 (Hatch 27 not out, Wilson 13). Napier O.B. v. Harbour .Board. — At tho conclusion of the first day's play H.S.O.B, had a comfortable first innings lead over Harbour Board. In the first innings H.S.O.B. made 221 (Barlow 65, Douglas 59,, Conole 17, J. Mahonly 16, King 15 and Galbraith 10; Hayden ook four for 60). Harbour Board were all out for 67 (Hayden 23, Blunsden 14; Galbraith took four for 19 and Gray four for 14). NAPIER JUNIOR B.
Ahuriri v. Napier High. — Ahuriri defeated HJg£ School by 114 runs on the first inning^. The victors, batting first, declared with six wickets down for 192 (Heading 32, Mason 25, Boyd 36 not out, Northy 23 not out, Shepperson 19, Kavanagh 16, and Jeffery 16). School made 78 (Kelly 39, Campbell 19; Kavanagh toolc four for 21 and Mason three for 13). Williams & Kettle v. Taradale. — ' Williams & Kettle 's provided the day's big surprise in the B grade by narrowly defeatihg Taradale. Taradale batted first and made 126 (Stanford 26/ Redwood 22, G. Stanford 13 and McGrath 19; Jones took five for- 26). Williams and Kettle made 130. (H. Austin 56 and H.' Temperton 50; G. Stanford took eight for 39), United __ v. Tech. 03.— United B ,gain^ a three-point win over Tech. Old Boys. United, batting first, made 152 (Yercoe 21, Martin "29, Falls 33, Edumundson 18, Stephenson 12; Swan four wickets for 49, and Williams three for 41). Technical made 109 (Swan 31, Hart 37, Nelmes 10; Hunter four for 40, and Yercoe four for 26).' HASTINGS JUNIORS.
Mahora v. Havelock.— The visitors had first use of the village wicket to make 107 (S. Lowe 23, D. Trumper 22, A. Carrington 21, k. Trunper 20; .Pankhurst five for 38, W. Whitekead three for 17). Havelock replied with .60 (Pankh\irst 15, Davies 10; D. Trumper five for 15, A. Carrington fiwe for 35). — Mahora gained three points by 47 runs on the first innings. Hastings High School B v. Fruitgrowers. — School batted first to make 166 (Crerar 50, J. Wakelin 41, Uill l'»} Rowe 19," Pitch 12; Geake four for 34, Heenan three for 29). Fruitgrowers replied with 75 (Galbraith 27, C. Taylor 19, W. Crombie 10; Appleby four for 15, Toothill three for 16) and followed on to lose two wickets for 25 runs. School gained three points by 91 runs on the first innings. Hastings v. Otane. — Batting first Otane made 49 (Stephens 12, Drinkrow 10; Plank five wickets for 27 and Amess four for 20. Hastings totalled 141 for the loss of four wickets (Amess 39 not out, Bowlands 38 not out, .Drummond 22, and Timms 20. Otane's second innings resulted in 96 runs for the loss of seven wickets (Curley 30 not out, Cullen 28, and Drinkrow 20). Hastings secured a three point win on. the first innings b£ 92 runa. " J \
