In preparing the uovel for tho screen, E. C. Sherris:, author of "Journey's End," collaborated with Remarque, and the result is a filrn which retains all • the power of the story, with its effectiveness heightened by brilliant photography and dir^ ection. - So vividly did the author depict the grimness of post-war Germany that he Was exiled, but the purpose of his boon was not merely to expose tho ctmditious of his own land but to show from hrs pcrsonal knowledge tho effect that wai has on humanity. Albort,- the shy,- like* able youth who had gone to the war, returns to find that a war profiteer has boen paying attentions to his fiancee. Ho shoots tho man, with less compunc* tron than he had shot his enemips^ in the war, and cannot understand why he is tried for murder when he had reaton for his deed. Othor episodes in the story are presented in an eflualiv poignant fashion. The leading roles in the picture are takou by Jolin King, Eichard Cromwell, 1 Slim Summerville and Andy Devine,] while Barbara Read has tlio chief fo* minine part.
