PUBLIO NOTICES. AN OPEN LETTER HASTINGS CO-OPERATIVE - BAKERY SOCIETY, LTD, Owing to certain rumours now in circulation which may create a false impreession in the minds of the public the following is the true position as regards my own personal connection with the above named society. Having had experience' of co-operative societies in the Old Country and knowing the great advantages which their members enjoy I was an.ious that in the town where 1 had lived so long I should have the opportunity of introducing this very valuable movement. Sn doing this I incurred a good deal of. expense for printing, advertising, etc., and purchase of a large quantity of flour to assist to set this Society going. I have not been repaid - any part of this outlay. The Society accepted a tenancy of my bakehouse, but for the first three months 1 was paid 'no rent and I have since agreed to writo this amount oflP altogether. It has been a great disappointment to me that, notwithstanding the sacriflces I made to inaugurate the movement, the Society has failed in its purpose through no fault of mine. I offered to manage the Society f6r six months free of charge and do my best to establish it on a profitable basis But my offer was not accepted. Throughout the whole period of the Society's existence I have not handled any part of the flnances of the Society. I have only learned through the newspapers that the business has rocently been sold at a very low figure. I feel it a duty to the members of the 'Society, some of whom I persu^ded to accept m6mbership, and .the public generally who knew my connection with the Society, • that they should knowvthe sacrifices I have made in its interests and also that I am not in any sense responsible for its liquidation.
