^ J "RAIDS" ON ENGLAND - SCOTS IN SEARCH OF TALENT. "The beginning of international Association football is ncar, and the frequent visits of Scottish seiectors to English clubs in search of talent has been unusual," says a Londbn .correspondeht. "It is even said that Scotlan.d's .best team is to be found in England. This may be an exaggeration, but it is expected that calls will.be made on several players to make good the. deficiency of talent at home." "Jt is complained that English clubs have faken the best of Scotland's players. Few, however, have crossed the bortfer this season, the most riotable being Macaulay, a Rangers' inside forward, who has- joined West Ilam. I tlijnk, too, that those who have been here some time have improved considerably by attuning their play to the greater speed which is demanded. Alex James insisted that he could not have hoped to haye "attained his position in the game if he had remained in Scotle.nd, and McCulloch, the Brentford centre-for-ward, who- came from the Hearts two seasons ago, confesses that he has made more headway in the game than he ever expected. "It is unfort'unate for England that neither of the ' two best centre-for-wards, Drake, , of the . Arsenai, - and Steele, of Stoke,* is available, both being seriously injured arid likely to be out of the game for some time. The handicap is the grater owing to the fact, as-a recent trial revealed, that there is no one available adequately to fill the position. Against Ireland, Mills, of Chelsea,- was the leader of the attack. . But, . while' lacking dominating power, he is not an expert in ball play. "The most notable feature of the team was that both the inside forwards. Hail, ,df Tottenham Hotspur, and .G.oulden, of West Hani, were taken from the second division, Hitherto when this "has been done, it has been found that' the men did not command the essential pace. In this respect, however, the two players were an exception, . and I think it is possible that the disparity between the first and second divisions is less than formeriy."
