500th Anniyersary of Dick Whittington

AUCKLAND, Last Night. The fact that. there were five separate banking accounts still open in the name of the famous Eichard Whittington, Lord Mayor of London, ivho died in-1437, was inentioned yesterday by Mr G. N. Pharazyn, of Da.nnevirke, as an example of how the great metropolis, in spite of modern progress^ is essentially linked with the past. Mr Pharazyn, who is a well-known H.B. sheepfarmer, -returned by the Kangitata from a visit to England. Mr Pharazyn referred to_ the matfer 'when mentioning that, as' a member of the Mercers Company, he lrad re ceived two oopies of old Northampton spoons, dated- 1618, in commemoration of the Coronation. Whittington had been' four tinies master of the company which was the senior of the great city guilds.
