Mr. Howard Cloverdale has been appointed lionorary assistant opthalmic surgeon at the Auckland Hospital. Sir Cyril Ward and Lady Ward, who have been spending a holiday in Australia during the past two months, have returned to Christchurch. Lieute^ant K. W. Hay, R.N., was a passenger by the Rangitata from Lonaon. He will join the Admiralty survey ship Endeavour. The Rev. D. J. A. Shaw has returned to Hastings after attending the sitting of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in Auckland. ' Mr. T. H. Carmiahaol arrived in Auckland by the Rangitata and later left for Gisborne where he is to take up the' position of editor of tne Gisborne Times. Dr. C. E. Maguire, after 26 years' service as an executive officer of the Auckland Hospital Board and at present medical superintendent of the Auckland Infirm'ary, will retire on March 31. Mr. C. G. McGonagle, of Christchurch, lias been ai|poiuted railway goods' agent in Wellington. Mr. McGonagle joined the ltailway Department in. July, 1899, as a cadet and was for a time stationed at Poi;t Ahuriri. Mr. J. Coates,. production manager for General Motors (N.Z.) Ltd., Wellington, returned to New Zealand on Wednesda-y by the Rangitata after a sis montlis' tour of his firm's American manufacturing plants. Mr. H. G. F. van Huls, formerly a resident Magistrate in Java, arrived at Auckland by the Maetsuycker from the J^utch East Indies. He intends to study constitutional law in the Do*minion. , Mr. J. A. Henry of Auckland has ••been appointed to the position of senior inspector of schools, Napier, and will take up his duties about the beginning of March next, when Mr. T. A. Morland will be transferred on promotion to Otago. i Bishop West-Watson, Bjshop of Christchurch, returned from England ,by the Rangitata after attending two important religious conferences of a world-wide character. He was met by Archbishop Averill, Private of' New Zealand. -Miss M. E. Browu, matron of thn Dannevrike Hospital for the past 12 years, has tendered her resignation on account of ill-health due to war services. Miss Brown was granted eix months' leave of absence on full pay •from a date in the New Yenr to bo mutually arranged.
Dr. I. Reifer, a graduate of the University -of Vienna, arrived in the Dominion by the Rangitata. He is a doctor of science, specialising as . a biochemical engineer, and will tak© a position at the Medical School at the University of Otago. The Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bisbop of Ao-tea-roa, ,and the Rev. D. N. Macdairmid, M.B.E., B.A.t will be New Zealand delegates to attend the world conference of International Missionary Council. This gathering was to have been held in Hangchow, China, in October 1938, but will now take place in hTadras, India, from December 10 to 30 next.
