Auckland Woman for Trial LEAVES COURT SCREAMING

j • AUCKLAND, Last Night. . • A dressmaker ' named Olive Marie Murftitt, married,. aged 37 (Mr. Aekins) was charged before Mr. P.'K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Couft with connselling or procuring a woman to use unlawfully an instrument on a girl aged 19 on or about Augnst 19. The girl concerned gave evidencc that in August she visited the, accused's home with a young man. with whom she had been keeping company. He gave some money to accused who said she would get a woman to perform an operation on witness and said tkat she would lend witness her wedaing ring so that the cost would be £12 instead of £20. The operation was performed in the house by a woman" but when it did not prove successful, accused told witness to see a doctor who gave her a nreseription which had the desired effect. Witness said sho left accused's house about September 3.. Her health was .not good and when sh'e coTTapsed at work on Octoher. 11 she was taken to the Auckland Hospital, being discharged in a few days. . .

Similar evidence was given by the young man who was keeping company with the prcvious witness. He said accused gave him a. wedding ring for the girl to wear while she was lu hospital. Cross-examined, witnes3 said the police told him that both the girl and he were'Iiable to proseeution but that they would not be prosecuted. Detectivo Brown said he. interviewed accused on October 12 when she made a statement which. she would not sign. She would not give particulars of the woman who perfcrmed the operation, saying she would not be so despicable as to give anyone away and that she could stand .it herself. Accused denied that the operation was performed in her house. Witness added that she . said a man and a girl stayo J at her house as man and wife. Accused pleaded not guilty md was committed to the Supreme ' Court for ■ trial. AVh'en Mr, Aekins applied for bail Detective-Sergeant Walsh said bail liad been refused in recent cases even when an application was made to the Supreme Court. In view of the next Supreme Cuurt sessions not being until Pebruary the Magktrate granfed bail of £250. Accused left the courthouse screaming Joudly, .
