L'resa Association.)

Closing of Hotels on Saturday

(By Telegraph—

AUCKLAND, Last Night. In presenting the report of the Temperance Committee to 5 the Presbyterian General Assembly to-day, the Rev. E. Gardiner said the colnmittee was of the opinion that the Churcli had left too much to the New Zealand Alliance. It was the Church that had the key to the problem of temperance. Police statistics, showing alarming increases in drunkenness and allied offences, were quoted to' the Assembly and speakers expressed the opinion that there were few hotels in the Dominion m which liquor could not be procured after kours . Resolutions were adopted in favour of giving more temperance instruction, tlianking the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, for his vigorous - campaign against intemperance on public highways, and requesting the Government seriously to consider the application of the 40-hour week to liquor bars in such a way as to ensure they should remain closed on Saturday. "The committee was instructed to formulate a constructive policy calculated to unite the temperance forces of th* Church.
