(Received 18, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON. N ov. 17. The Times Berlin corr&spontent says, although it is felt that a more friendly atmosphero now prevails for tlie Halifax-Hitler iueeting, German official quarters continue to emphasise its unofficial naturc. Autlioritative statements from both sides, it is pointed out, have established tlie real significanco of the meeting, and also its limitations. Mr Chamberlain has stressed British friendship with France and Ametica, and Germany has stated with equal clarity that the Berlin-Rome axis and the anti-Com-luunist triangle, will remaih unshakeable. Yet between these boundaries, so runs the German argument, there is plenty of room for negotiation becauae existing friendships Which are not exclusive will be neither disturbed nor endangered by preparations for freBh relationships. The Daily Telegraph's Rome eorrespondent says that Lord Halifax's visit to Berlin is being watehed attentively, coupled with disappointment that no arrangements have yet been made for the opening of British-Italian conversations. Signor Mussolini is most unlikely to make any political pronouneement until the result of Lord Halifax's visit is known. Meanwhile, Signor Gayda, the Duce's principal newspaper commentator, announces in the Giornale d'Ttalia Italy's determination never to return to the League owing to the iinposition of sanetions. "Between Rome and Geneva the break is spiritually and politieally irreparable,'-" he says. Later: Lord Halifax lunched with Baron von Neurath, German Foreign Minister, and later visited the Hunting exhibition. j aa—
