"Roamer.")

Manawata Centre Visit on December 11 NOTES AND COMMENTS

' - (By

Rain interfered with bowling last week-end, and in conseuqence , very little play took place. How©ver, ti© greens iave benefited, and from now on should be in great order. The date of the visit .of the Mana-,, watu Centre has been altered, and will now take place on Saturday, December 11, not December 4. It is proposed that. ti© visitors (16 rinks) play in Napier in, the morning on tie Napier' and Wairere greens against 1§ teams picked from Napier elubs and one from the centre, as follows: 4 Napier, 4 Wairere, 3 Bluff BS11, 2 Port, ,2 Omarunui, 1 Centre.. In tie afternoon' ihe visitors will come out to Hastings and play on the Hastings and Kia Toa greens. in an inter-Oentre contest, the teams to be mad© up from tie follOwing clubs: 1 Centre, 2 Kia. Toa, 3 Hastings, 5 from Napier clubs and.. tie balance from. tie other clubs in the Centre. Given a fine day avery enjoyable timo siould be spent. * AustralianChampionship. Mr James Belcher, of the ^Napier ClUb, ias entefed for tie single-handed ria^apionsiip of Australia, to be decided at Sydney in Januai-y. All bowlers will wisi Mr Beleher every success jn his trip across tie Tasman. ShieldMatcb©©. Ti© Shield matches will commence on Saturday, but at time of writing the draw bad not been announced. There will "be four Tounds, and tiey will. be completed before Christmas. Tiere will ie A© Tiursday matcies. •

Encroachment of Player'a Rigits. An increasing and disquietening bad practice on tie part of a fair percentage of players in rink bowling ias developed in recent years (write "Running Shot" in tie Taranaki News). It 3© tie encroachment by leads and seconds.on tie preserves and rigits of the player in tie third position of a rink, and it calls for censure on the part of the skips wio are eontrolling rinks wherein these well-meaning, over-keen individuals are playing. Wien a rink is selected for inter-elub matches, etc., ©aci position in the rink is caTefully considered and tie players allotted to those positions are generally capable and experieneed bowlers who siould be well able to carry out tie duties which the position demands witiout any„ ad-. viee or outside help. Eaeh player,' too. from. lead to skip, ias ceftain* duties of his own to perform and tiey generally need all one's attention if earried out properly. Some tiirds /resent tiese snggestions of advice, whetJher or not tiey are correct. 'If iarmony in, Ihe rink is to be preserved and a true team ■ spirit exhibited, wiici makes for success, one and all should endeavour to give of Hs best in iis own particnlar place in tie rink and so leave ihe player in third position free to pursue Ms own line of thonght and concentrat© on giving sound inStructions wien asked by the skip. Another bad practice. is . the .shifting of bowls away from the head. wien tie tiirds are considering a measure. Bowls siould not he moved until tie tiirds iave sanctioned olierwise, . • •

f Advice to Beginners. Tie following information may be of assistance - to tie noyice:— Tn matci games a beginner siould exercise tio same cairn coufidence that he does when praetising on his own. ' He has the confidenee of every other member of his team, wio realises tiat & man cannot do more tian iis best, and to do this. one riust overcome nervousness and play every shot with determination, no matter iow difficult it may seem. Carry a stout ieart and "be up." "Being up" is au essential in tie game of bowls, for a bowl at the baek o£ Ihe kitty is worti two in tie front. If you do happen to play a bit ieavy, you get away mti it, "while a short bowl will get you nowiere. _ Tiere may 'be occasions wien your skip calls for a ciange of hands, so don't have a preference for one iand, and siould you feel conscious of playing better on oue iand tiau the-otier, take a little practice on tie weak hand only, as often as possible. Wien playing the backiand f ace well away to it, since many bowls are sent up narrow as a result of being played across the kuees irstead of straigit out, as in tio forehand. It. will be of assistance to No. 3 and tie skip if you make a point of inviting your opponent on to tie bank for a ciat while tiey complete tie head, and you will find tiat it will lessen tie strain caused by unnecessary cdncentration on tie remainder of tie "bowls played by tie skips. Oue has quite sufficient to do to concentrata on e£forts for two and a-half iours, ' and it is small wonder tiat a skip becomes tired by tie end of tie game, as ie has to concentrate on every bowl played tirongiout. Wien you iave sighted the leagth' of the head, direct attention to tie traek to get you tiere and follow tie course of tie howl until it comes to rest. * You will be better able to adjust your track to tie head either narrower or wider. You are sure to run narrow if you look at tie head wien about to deliver tie bowl. Some of tie finest bowlers in tie district iave earned tiat di&tinction far more by tio manner in wiici tiey iave played tieir games than by the number of wins tiey iave have gained.
