' MILBOURNE, Nov. 16. Victoria defeated New Zealand by five wicketa to-day af ter a bright innings, a feature of which was the partnership 'of Lee and Hassett and the! latter 's 127. Heavy rain fell overnight, but the weather was fine when play was' vesumed and the wicket good. Though defeated the New Zealanders' performance was favoura-bly commented upon. The team departed for Sydney to-night and are playing there on Friday, leaving by the Awatea for Wellington on Tuesday. Victoria set out the maka the 293 runs required to defeat New Zealand. They had lost no wickets for 35 runs at stumps yesterday, and Loe and. Rigg continued the innings .to the bowling of Parsloe and Vivian. Pai'sloe had re-: covered froin the effects of his injury yesterday. Rigg was out leg before from "Vivian 's third ball, leaving Lee and Gregory oarrying on. Both bats- . men played cautiously, with eyes on the ' runs still to make. When Gregory reaehed 12 he tried to swing a ball from Vivian and was caugkt by the wicket keeper Lowry. The luncheon adjournment came with the scoxe at two for 133. ' On resuming the batsmen pulled and Bwung and defied all the efforfs for the various bowlers to dislodge them. Eighty-two minutes together at the wickets gave the partnership a century, the batsmen still playing with. the utmost confidence and kceping the fieldsmen busy, steadily wrecking N?w Zealand '$ prospects. Lee had reachod 72, when misfortune overtook him.. He swung a hard ball from Lamason, which was smartly fieldod, to Wallace at third slip who returned it to the keeper while Lee was trying to snatch a single. His brilliant innings had taken 183 minutes and .the partnership yielded 112. Hassett was 69 when Bromley came on. Moloney gave Bromley a life when four, dropping a catch off Vivian. Pargloe, however, was not so merciful when Bromley full-t'ossed a ball from Donnelly and took a difficult catch running backwards. He fell heavily en his head, but held the ball. Ledward joined Hassett at 75, but Vivian caught and bowled him first ball— five for 194. With 99 runs required by Victoria to save the mateh and Barnett in, New Zealand took heart again. Barnett, however, stood_ firm, though when, nine he made a fierce swing at Parsloe, which broke the bat. Various bowling changes were unable to move -Hassett, who took everything that came with equanimity though ob viously playing for his century, whicl he .obtained after 177 minutes, inclifci ing' gix fours. Barnett also battec brilliantly. By tea-time New Zealand 's hopes o victory were completely faded. Th score was then five for 245. With onl; 48 to make to pass'New Zealand 's scor and five more batsmen in hand, Hasset and. Barnett stayed together, Hassei . surviving several appeals. The required score was gained at 5 o 'clock.
