FAR EAST RELIEF
Hospital Board Donation f 4 When we consider that there are fhousands of children in China to-day breadless and without clothes, I thiuk if we have the milk of human kindness in "u's we should endeavour to -do Aomething." .* In:the above words Mr A: E. Befl ford, at the monthly ' meeting of the Hawke's Bay Hospital Board in Napier yesterday afternoon supported an appealsfro.mthe New Zealand Red Cross Society for a subscription to the " Far-East Relief Fund. Mr H. Vi Hoadley expressed the opiaion that, as tlae Red Cross Society was .engaged in the care of the sick and heedy, it was a body closely allied in ideals with a hospital board and an appeal from such an organisation merited the board's assistance. The chairman doubted whet^ier the board should contribute as a bo9y, but it was stated by the secretary that 'the society 's letter had said it was .hopcd aoon'to have special Governmenr authority to perrnit local -bodies to ccaitribute. / ' When it was pointed out that . a mumber of the board's Tatepayers were probably ijontributing individually to the .fund, Mrs Bedford said that he for one, was ;a priva^e cont'ributor, but he would be^ quite ready to pay .a little more as a ratepayer. Mr R. W. Wallace remarked that the Chinese in New Zealand were being taxed 30/- in £l for eraployers and 5/ in the £ for -employees. He movod that the boafd donate 10 guineas to the.fund, this being carried.
