INTER-CLUB TENNIS

Competitions To Be Re-intro-duced by H.B. Association

ENCOURAGING TALENT The queslio'n of inter-elub tennis coinpetitions was the subject of a long discussion by the management committee of the Hawke's Bay Lawn Tennis Association last night, and it was unanimously decided to re-intro-duce this feature of the sport. It was pointed qut that the Luxford Shield competition in Hastings was working satisfactorily, and the committee decided to carry on with this competition and arrange something similar in other parts of the province, with the idea that the winners in each section of the provincial area should meet at the end of the season for an afternoon's com-' petitive tennis. It was also decided that during the season, the two top players of each club should be invited to meet in matches arranged b'y tfhe association, thus keeping an eye on the talent of the smaller clubs. The provincial hard court tourney has been offered to the Hinemoa Club, Dannevirke, and will be played at Easter, weather permitting. Last year tihis fixture had to be called off on account of inclement yCather. The committee decided that the association'9 delegates to the New Zealand Association be instrueted to support a motion, notice of which has been given by the Mamawatu Association, that the finals of the North and South Island championships be the best of three sets, not of five, as at present. The records of the registration of the various club's colours having been lost, it was decided to write to the afiiliated clnbs asking them to submit colours- for registration. These will be considered at the next committee meeting.

The following ranking matches are being arranged: — Men: J. N. Lowry v. R. H. Milburn, R. J. D. yharpe v. W. H. Read, H. Elliott v. M. R. Best, L. H. Moorhead v. D. Ritchie. Women: Mrs Milburn v. Mrs Cottrell, Mrs M. Glenny v. Miss M. Evans, Mrs Lambe v. Miss B. Griffiths, Miss A. Ormond v. Mrs W. Mawson.
