• ft ■ ■ Decision to Hold New Year Meeting

An extraordiuary general meeting of the Ongaonga Sports Club was held in the.hall to discuss the holding 'of the sports fixture on January I, 1938, the reorganistion of the club or the abandonment of the meeting and the elub's going into recess. There was a. very representative attendance of members and supporters under the chairmanship of Mr D. Holden. Mr Holden said that the annual meeting was held in September, when there was a. very poor attendance. At that meeting the secretary, Mr B. Dassier. tendered his resignation, and nobody else could be found to take his place. Due to the finaneial state of the elub, the committee could not see its way clear to pay a professional secretary. A deputation'to the Makaretu Sports Club seeking amalgamation of the two clubs stated its case at Makaretu, but that " club was not in favoar of combining. Thetefore, it was thought best to eall u general meeting to discuss the reorganisation of the club. Mr W. E. Coles said it would be a great pity to drop the fixture as the meeting had been held on New Year's ,Day for nearly 50 years. He appealed to the youth of the district to carry on , in the interests of the district. Mr H. Leach, speaking as an old competitor, hoped from the athletes ' point of view that the meeting would -be continued as in the past. Mr R. Dassier said that Messrs B. Dassier and T. Meissner were prepared to act as. joint secretaries. This informa--tion was cordially received by the meeting, "and the secretaries were thanked for their offer. It was then decided that the sports be held as usual on January 1938. As th8 committee had resigned en bloc, the election of officers was then proceeded with, resulting: — Chairman, Mr D. Holden; committee, Messrs Whit%vorth, Bradlpy, J. Kirk^ B. Freemantle, D. Mackie, C. Moran, Beachen, T. Bibby, H. Leach, W. J. Yardley, W. Masters^ J: • Pettit, A. Bibby, R. Ross, W. Ros's, H. Fargher, J. McLeay, W. Pettit; R. Dassier, ,W. Coles, H. Baker. S.. J. Fletcher, W. Freemantle^ R. Kirk, J. F. Bell, T. Sullivan, J. Waldrom, and O. G. Harris. The 5 chairman asked for suggestions concerning " the • reorganisation of ]the club and- ideas about new events. . . . , . Committee Meeting. ... The meeting then closed and resolved itself into a committee meeting. It was decided that the admission fees be the same as for 1937, except that car admi.ttance be 2/-. It was decided to xetain the athletic events, to increase the novelty events and to omifc one of the chopping events for 1938. After discussion it was decided to include a local maiden three-lap cyclo race, of one mile, and ,a, one-lap local schoolboys' cycle race. The dance after the sports on New Year's Day is to be held as usuab and Mr Te Tau and his orchestra are to.be" engaged. The following were elected judges: — Horse events, Mr A. P. "White; athletic events. Messrs N.' A. McKsnzie, B. Tweedie and. E. Yogng; axemen's events, Messrs S. Hull, W. Thompson; handicappers: athletic, Mr H. Leach; axemen, Mr D, Howse. A grounds committee was appointed as follows: Messrs Bradley, Kirk, Holden and Beachen. The meeting closed with a vot9 of thanks to the chair.
