Fatality in Pohangina River

PALMERSTON N., This Day.. A ,10-year-old girl, Joan MaTy. TunnL cliffe, daughter ; of Mr and Mrs E. Tun- ' nicliffe, of ; Ashhurst, was drdwned ' in the Pohangina rivfer- just above the' railway bridge yesterday afterhdon. She * was 'hathirig' with two girl companiohs, ahd had * crossed the river, which was aimost a chain wid'e at the spot, without any apparent difficulty. Shortly afterwards the other girls. noUced she ,was in difficulties and called out to some boys who were nearby. As she rose after sinking to the bottoiu, one of them held.' out a sti'clc, but m her struggles she was uhable to ieaeh it. She sank again and the boy immediately raced along the bank to a place where somo young men were sunbathing and gave the alarm. Thoy rushed to the place where the girl had last been seen but there was no trace of lier. Later one of them, Glen Thorne, was abl-e to locate the body and bring it to the surface. The doctor was summoned, but only to pronouncs that the girl yv&s dead.
