While investors have little cause fot satisf action at the movements of .th# past week, they have xather more rea-. son for hope. Eor technical reasons, if for nothing else, some modest recovery should .be imminent, The news from America encburages the hope that President Roosevelt i* at last determined to make an effort to restore prosperity. Pending. a de* finite lead from America, London to tending to mark time. Australian and other Dominion stocks share the strength of gilt-edged issues. Eoreign bondholders received a nasty shock from Brazil's default, which aroused the fiercest indignation. Industrial issues had a ' rather uusatisfactory week. A 50,000 increast in unemployment is hardly encouraging. . The. fiuctuations in commoditiea have been extremely marked and nervewracking. The market seenied tp be completely demoralised on Mofiday, with rubber below 7d, but on Thursday the markets were as optimistic as they, had been depressed on Monday; then they again turned erratic. No doubt the commodity and share markets washed out the favourable news from the United States. Lead made a sharp recovery.
