LEADING COLTS

Australians Hua, Ajax and Avenger QUESTION OF SUPREMACY With the close of the Victorla Eaoing Club's Spring Meeting the- question of three-year-old supremacy as betweeu Hua, Ajax and Avenger remains debafcable, writes 4Phaeton;' in the New Zealand Herald. When Avenger disposed of Ajax and Hua in the Australian Derby he wais considered likely to prove the outstanding colt. However^ the Caulfield Guineas saw Ajax victorious, with Avenger a neck away in second place and Hua third. In the Victoria Derby Hua developed improvement, with the xesult that he scored a -win by half a head over Ajex, with Aenger in third place. Ajax subsequently won the Linlithgow Stakes, run over a mije at weight-for-age, ahd, as he was credited with equalling the existing Australian and New Zealand record of 1.354 for the distance, he has sto.od up to his strenuous spring campaign in brilliant style. Probably nothing more will be exacted from Hua, Ajax and Avenger until the autumn and much interest will be eentred in the prospective meeting of the trio in the Victoria St. Leger at Flemington in February. Although Avenger disappointed in* the Victoria Derby, he is popularly regarded as likely to develop into the best stayy of the present seaison's three-year-olds in Aiistralia. So far the stake 4winnings of the Australian colts are as follow: Ajax, £11,450; Hua, £6970; Avenger, £5490.
