THE HIGHROAD TO BEAUTY IS AN EASY ONE
The highroad to beauty is an easy aud pleasant one to travel nowadays; and no woman need feel diffident about enhancing her natural charms with artifieial aids. It is important tLat cosmetics should be properly : pplied, otherwise they will defeat their own ends and leave tlie face with a patchy, "made-up" look. First, the skin surface should be cleansed and all traces cf previous make-up removed by means of a cold cream. After a few minutes the cream is removed with a soft cleansing tissue that does not bruise or irritate the , skin. Next a vanishing cream or liquid powder base is applied, and over this the puff, anl patted on carefully so that no "powder lines" will be left. The regular usc of strong ast/ringents is to be deplored, even for those who suffer from enlargcd pores. Gold water (not ,ice) is as good a braeer as mo.t, but a mild astringent with a witcli hazel base will do no harm if x.sed only occasionally. It should be applied after the cleansing cream has been removed and before the foundation cream has been put on. A facin! mask used two or three times a week at 1 ome is useful for correcting unsatisfactory skin conditions. For oily skin, tihat -has a tendency toward open pores, a good mask can be made as follows: — To half a cup of toilet oatmeal, add equal parts of rose water and witch hazel (or eau de Cologne), sufficient to make a stiff paste. Beat in an egg (white and yolk) and apply to the face. This wiri dry on the skin and draw a little. Allow it to remain on from five to eight minutes and then remove with pads of cotton wool that -have been damped in warm water. Apply a cleansing or cold cream liberally, leave for a few minutes, and then remove with cleansing tissues. For the very dry, over-sensitive skin, use this mask: — Talce the yolk of an egg, beaten into lialf a cup of warm almond oil, and add a few drops of rose water. Apply evenly to the skin, leave on for 10 minutes, remove witii tissues, apply a good nourishing skin food, and leave on overnight. Those who are too pallid for beauty will require a little rouge, ("'her cream or powder, and this should be applied. before the final powdering. Do not dab it carelessly on each clieek; blend it well so that there is no clear line of demarcation. This takes a little practice to do well, but is not really a difficult operation. The throat is as important as the face — apply your foundation cream and powder here just as carefully, for nothing looks so grotesque as a smooth, creamy eheek and chin merging into a neck that has had no attention whatsoever lavished on it. And the neck is incidentally, where most people first show their age.. Carefully treat the skin of the neck and throat regularly with a cleansing cream, smoothing it in with the fingers -and leaving it to be absorbed for a minute or two, then wipe away with tissues and apply a mild astringent on a pad of cotton wool, patting briskly with an upward movement until the skin begins to tingle.
