Competition Not Feared By N.Z. Firms 3 . . NO JURISDICTION "Although the Alfle Cam gets quite big catches, i do not tlhink that we lose much of our Australian trade," said Mr a. f. Jagger, chainnan of directors of Sanford, Limited, at the annual meeting when a shareholder, Mr f. w. Blakey, raised the question of the operation of Australian trawlers in the vicinity of New Zealand. "i gather that the Cam Company has desigils on our fish," Mr Blakey said. 1 ' How are we going to get on with our export business?" "We have had it before, and i do not think we can do anything if thejr fish outside the territorial waters," Mr Jagger replied. "i suppose we will live through it, and i hope so. We have no jurisdiction and the Government has ho jurisdiction. it may affect our saies, bnt Sanford Limited, is doing business in practically every' town in New South Wales. We have built up a wonderful organishtion, and they are endeavourifcig to break it down." the chairman concluded by reitera';ing that, in his opinion, 'the eompany would not lose much of its Australian trade. a director, Mr f. m. Mills, said later that previous efforts to compete by sending trawlers from Australia had failed, and while the position was being watched, he did not consider it should cause undue coneern.
