Wallingford Birthday Day

On Thursday afternoon the Wallingford Women's Institute celebrated its seven birthday at the residence or Mr and Mrs A. S. Wilder. On arrival all gathered in the billiard room, which was cliarmingly decorated witli bowls of roses, sweetpeas, nligonilli, purple iidses and othor spring flowers. The meeting opened with the iiistitute creed nftPr which Mrs F. Jackson, who presided, apologised for the absence of tlie prcsident, Mrs J. D. Ormond, Llirough illuess, and extended a cordial wclcome to tlie guests, who included visitors, from the surrounding institutes. After business > liad been diseussed everyone' adjourned to tho beautiful garden, which was a riot of colour in Ihe brigli t sunshine. Yarious comp.eti-. tions had been arranged on the lawns and those not wiahing to participate spent a delightful time wandering round the garden admiring the beds of choice rosesj irises and tlie rock bank Avhich Avas a brilliant sight with its many rock plants. Ail returned to the billiard room for afternoon tea. The seven candles on the liandsome square .birthday cake, wero lit and bl.OAVii out .by Mrs Judd, snr., and the cake Avas cut by Mrs Ward and handed round. Pianoforte items by Mrs T. Hobson follow'ed and afterwards Mrs Jackson introduced the Rev. A. M. Niblock, of Porangahau, who wished the institute many happy return s. bring the institute to completion. Mr Niblock was later thanked by Mrs Wilson. The winners of the competitions.were as follows:— Cloclc golf, Mrs Ross 1, Mrs Ward 2; croquet, Mrs T. Given. Thanlcs was exprcssed to Mr and Mrs Wilder for lencliiig their house and grounds for the birthday party and the singing of tho National Anthem, brouhfc a happy afliernoon to a eloae.
