■ 9 Additional Contracts Let for Hastings FOUR CONCRETE HOMES, The second Instalment of the^ Government housing scheme in Hastings has been approved according to advice Teceived this morning from Mr E. L. Culton, M.P., who is. at present in' Wellington. In this second quota of contracts 11 houses are to be erected. Mr Cullen said that he had been informed "by the Under-Secretary for Housing, the Hon. J. 'A. Ltee, M.P., that a contract for ereeting four concrete houses had been let to Mr H. Abbott, and that a fuTther seven houses had been let to Mr P. J. Bridgeman. These residences are to be ereeted in the Hanrahnn bloek. off WilloWPark road.

The erection of concrete houses is a now departure as far as State houses in this district aro concerned, and in the present instance the buildings are actually two two-unit houses. They aTe to be placed at an angle on the come? section on both sides of the new snbdivisional Toad which is being formed, and a reporter was informed this morning by Mr Abbott that these partieular buildings were of a better type of house to those being erected aiid cost au appreciabie amou'nt more. In closo proximity to these latest houses approved is sitiiated tlie area that has been set aside by the depar| mont as a children 's playground, tlio department having offered the HastBorough Council the choice of a section in the block for this purpose. At present 26 dwellings are beinq erected by four different contractors in Akina street, so that to date the departmont has authorised the erection of 37 houBes. Several blocks of land have been purchased by the department, and it is understood that eventually there j will be in the vicinity of 90 houses erected on these areas. Early this week Mr Cullen intimated . that applications for rental of these and such other houses as may be erected in Hastings numbered between 450 and 560, despite the fact that not a single house was yet ready for occupa. tion, and probatfiy will nofc be so un til early in th© ne® yea^
