TRANSPORT PROBLEMS

Wool from the BasSJ Ooast is now steadily being shipped to Napier in, preparation for the first wool sale toi tlie season to be held next mOnth. About a fortnight ago the first shipraent was hrought in, and now mosttot the early coastal clips are awaitmg sliipment to Napier, which will contmuo up to the day of the sale. From the' niajority of the small bayi which line tho coast between Napier and Gisborne," and also froni a" large number south of Napier, there comes wool each season by boat. Indications this season are that the opening of the raiiway as far as Wairoa has made little difference to the quantity of wool being shipped, for one shipping company will have pne boat engaged m this task from now until the first sale, while other vessels trading on the coast will also bring wool to the stores in addition to their usual cargoes.

In many of the bays there is no provision for bringing even the small coastal vessels alongside a wharf or jetty for the loading of wool. Instead the vessel anch.org as far out as half-a-mile from the beach, and the bales ot wool are carried out in surf-boati. Horses are driven out into the sur£ to meeb the approaching boat, and the operation M transferring cunibersome bales of wool from dray to a surf-bdat that is tossing ahout on a swell makes the work ah mtere'sting one, and serves as a reminder that there are still many parts of New Zealand without adequate access.
