Marshal Chiang Kai-shek in an in*" terview, said he does not favour direct negotiations between China and Japan, and that he believes the Brussels con* ference will achieve valuable results. China has shown herself canable of resisting the better-equipped Japanese and would continue to do so indetinitely. He was coniident of eventual victory. Temporary gains and Teverees did not affeet the issue, while China 's Tesistant capacity was intact. The fighting of the last three months had shown the success of the Chinese nlan exhausting the enemy,* which had been held at Shanghai and Woosung for a long time, despite their superior armaments and despite the lack of geographical advantages and fortifications to facilitate the defence. The initiative j-emained with China. The Japanese loeses were the heaviest they had sustained since the Eusso-Japanese War.
