COLOUR ON THE VERANDAH
SOME NEW 0UTD00R FURNISHINGS
'J^HERE is no part of ' a house that is used more than a verandah, particularly' in the summer timej and the climate inak'es a verandah almost a necessary coniplement' to ahy , house in keeping with the much-bo'osted New Zealand outdoors life... So many homes a're huilt with beautiful outlooks. that it is appropriate there should be somewhere ' to relax and admire the. ever-changing views. Since verandahs come in for a good ' deal of use, it is necessary that the furniture should be able to stand wear and tear as' well as appear. attractive. Now that summer is almost here housewives are beginning to think. of buying new furnishings .to brighten Lp the verandah. The first. consideration is floor covering—if your; verandah has not the popu.lar parquet flooring— and lots of colour can be introduced by liaving coir or seagrass niatting in bright colours. The newest designs are in ' bold "triangles with such combinations as orange and green, red' and brown, bright blue and dark blue, or fawn and tangerine. For the verandah . that opens off a bedroom -which is carpeted with a variegated pattern linois in mottled designs will make 'an' excellent niatch and also a good ' baekgrdund for the ■ furniture. . Chromium . is the very • latest idea for verandah. furniture ; and for. the verandah of the -.seaside. home ifc is invaluable because sea air.. will not .rust it. It is also strong^i.nd(serviceable.. - € Very attractiv.e verandah suites in ... ' %
chromium, combined with black plush leather, can be bought. A neat acces-soi-y is a cocktail traymobile which could be set with frosted. glasses with black rims to complete the striking colour scheme. • No verandah is complete without a settee which can be easily converted into a bed at night, should an extra bed be needed. Many of these settee s are now being made with extra width and length and some can be either a double o t single bed. Made of cane, they can be upholstered in brighjly-coloured cottage weaves which promise to be a serviceable material for verandah chairs and beds. On a hot day when every room in the house seems to be stifling there is nothing more pleasant than limcheon on the verandah with shady ' awnings pulled down to shut out the sun. The table settings must be planned for pleasant coolness, so a. suggestion would be a palegreen tablecloth and crockery in the same pale' shade with bands of contrasting colour. . . , There are a few things more appealing on a.hot day than cool drinks served in long glasses to the time^of tinkling ice. The colour of - glasses makes them the right thing for a brightly-fumished verandah. Some have coloured spots n them, while others can be bought in various colours to malch a small verandah traymobile, which is a handy piece of furniture at any' time. ,
