SHEEP-WORRYING IN H.B.
Higher Tax on Working Dogs Suggested The menace of sheep-worrylng was. considered by the Hawke's Bay Couu-' ty Council yesterday when- it was decided that ' a committee should .report on the - advisability of increasing the tax. on bit'ches and fancy dogs. * - The chairman, Mr F. B. Lqgan, said that . increasing the tax on dogs ' might eliminate many of the undesirable type. Lt appeared that many -ehepherds had far too many dogs. If they. were limitedto four- dogs at 2/6 they would be discouraged from 'keeping.a number that were of- little use. An increfise in the tax fe.r a'.bitch would not be a hardship, because, if she was any good hej; pups' would lie renumerative. Too* hnany bitches were breeding only .wastera of pups. About Napier were many. private doge - which had done a lot of worrying. Fortunately several of : them had been - caught and -shot. . Mr. C. Lassen said that the co-npera-tion of the boroughs might be obtained. — no" hardship should be placed on the'genuine ' shepherd. Mr M. S. Chambers suggested a peri-c-dical round-up of stray dogs., 'JAe question is to be considered before the dog tax is again determined. .
