INTER-HOUSE SPORTS

Brilliant Display af McLean Park ELEVEN TEAMS COMPETE Marching, music, tableaux, competitions, and 150 vividly-attired girls were the ingredients of a fiiie reeipe of entertainment presented at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday in the second aunuai inter^house carnival. Before thousands of spectators draivn from all parts of the province, II teams pre» sented a display that f ar surpassed the brilliant success of the iirst meeting beld last year, and drew wholo-hearted applause for its originality and peri'ection. With the advantage of bright sunny weather, the carnival commenced in the afternoon at the Marino Parade with a muster and inspection of all teams, following which the .march to McLean Park was commenced. The band of the first battalion of the Hawke's Bay Rogiment and the Napier Technical College Memorial Band led the ■ march down Emerson street, where the standard of the marching of all teams «voked . admiring comment from those who -lined the streets. The care with which the training of the I teams had . been undertaken by the various instructors was at once evidenced by the swing- of the marching, v/hile the vivid colours of the eleven varieties of ' pi'cturesque costumes made the s'cene one that will be remembered. At McLean' Park a large crowd had gathered, and the teams commenced their grand parade., Each team-leader was equipped with a banner in' the colours of the team. Points were awarded in connection with - the competitions for several trophies for marching, physical drill and several competitions, and the afternoon 's prograinme was completed by a massed march. , In the evening, the cio'wd at the park liad increased greatly. The main stand was packed with spectators, the saats underneath the stand were islso full, while others had taken up va,ntage -points .on the grass banks at the end of the enclosure and had encroached upon the grass. It is estimated thot fully 4,000 people watched'the evening display, which commenced with a further parade of competitors, Then, to the music of the "Blazo Away ' ' march, there commenced tho grand march. For 35 minutes tho teams marched, in perfeet unison and with a dash that completed the picture made by the original uniforms and the music, through a maze .of intricatc movementS. Compared to Saturday 's evening march, the march that aroused tho admiration of those who saw the iirst carnival in 1936 was simple. In various formations, in two's, thrce's, and four's the competitors marched. Without the' slightest hitch or faltering and rvithout any interruption of th*} steady swing they made lines . march through lines, broke ofl? into six pointed stars which continued to march in circles, and resunied formation agaiu. As each movement wa3 performed tho applause from the stand was almost eontinuous, and the ovation givett at tho conclusion . of the march was fully deserved. Three tableaux were then presented, pupils . of the "Napier Girls' High Seh'ool, the Napier Intermediate School, and Hukarere CollCge assis'ting in tho formation of a six-pointed star, a Norfolk pine, and the words, "Napier 1937." All floodlights were switched o£T when the tableaux were in position, and the formations outlined by coloured torches in an effective display.
