DELAYED COMPENSATION
County Council To Protest SETTLER WAITED A YEAR A delay by the Commissioner of Crown Lands in giving compcnsation to a ratepayer in the Okawa riding for land taken for a stock paddock was tkeiSubject of a protest by Mr. E. H. Beamish at to-day's meeting of the Hawkes Bay County Council. 'T cannot help but protest concerning the delay which has taken place in this inatter," said Mr. Beamish. "This man's property was acquired nearly a tyear ago and the queslion of compensation to him is still unsettled. I understand tbat the Commissioner of Crown Lands stated the other day that he knew nothing .about it but that is sheer nonsense. I undertook to do a thing and have dono so, s,o far as 1 have been able but the thing had been held up by the Lands Department, with whom the council has had a lo\> of correspondence. The delay has been entiroly uncalled for and should be fixed up immediately." . The council decided to write to the Commissioner expressing regret that the matter had not been attended to, and: requesting him to gzive it his immediate attention.
