INTERVIEW ON SHIP
Canon Explains How Remarks Gained Publicity . Eegret was expressed by Canon C. Mortimer-Jones in a talk to Hastings Itotarians yesterday to the publicity given some brief eomment he made regarding the Duke of Windsor and the Rev. Mr. Jardine. ."I was taken on the hop," he said, with a broad smile. "JBut my best advice to any of you .is not to open your mouth to any stranger on the ship." Mr. Mortimer-Jones explained that when the vessel arrived at Auckland it was boarded by a big ^rowd of people, and everyone was asking the travellers how they enjoyed the trip and a lot bf other questions. Quite unwittingly he answered, very briefly and tersely, two. questions regarding. the
Duke of Windsor and the Rev. Mr. Jardine, without thinking that the eomment would "be given prominent publicity. "When I did realise that my questioner was a reporter, I gave him an intere'sting talk on two church conf erences," said Mr. Mortimer-Jones. "But nothiug appeared in tlie paper about that. All there was was headlines,. and a lot about the Duke of' Windsor- and the -Rev. Mr. Jardine, and my photo, graph — and what a photograph. "That, 1 suppose is 'good' journalisin,'' he added with a smile, "but I've •been nervous of reporters ever since." Mr. Mortimer-Jones said that had he known what the paper intended to publish, and had he had an opportunity of seeing the article before it appeared m print he most certainly would have condemned it as he "had no wish at all to appear as an authority on the affairs of "the Windsors. l
