MONEY GOES UP IN SMOKE
4 Hastings Celebrates Guy Fawkes' Day SPECTACULAR DISPLAY Hundreds of pounds went up in smoke last evening . when Hastings celebrated. Guy Fawkes to an extent that has not been excelled for many years. With the return of good times again it was possible for more attention to be given the celebrations this year and it is doubtful whether .there was a singlg hcfUsehold last evening that did not have some small display of lireworks. JStores were rushed yesterday afternoon in the final rally by youngsters, and adults too, for a supply of crackers and fireworks. Many of the retaflera sold .out their complete stoeks and at 5 o'clock it was practically impossible to obtain a sky-Tocket and many of /the more expensive and spectacular piece of fireworks. From shortly after, 7 o'clock bonfires were lit in all quarters of the borough and the fun of the evening commenced. All manner of crackers and flreworki were Bet off and there Was a contini ued hum of excitement from the youngsters aj3 well as their parents and othoj elder folk, indulged in the annual celebrations Of a figure in English history, whose name has been perpetuated by a custom that clearly has not died yet. "Guys" "were burnt with joyful ani ticipation of a conflagration and laughter was interSpersed by expre&sions of delight and. amazement as the various pieces of firev^Orks were let off. ,"Dad and Mum" joined in the fun and * everybody appeared to be quite happy. Now and then there was a cry of pain as a ,child, or an adult, suffered a . burn and 1 this morning quite a number of youngsters h'ave a small bandage round a finger or two as a reminder, " unpleasant one though it might be, of : last night 's fun. Only one serious ac* * eident has been reported and that to a young man. Members " of the Hastings Fire Brigade were "on duty" throughout tho evening in anticipation of anything going amiss, but their services were not called upon. ' - A Hastings resident who made a trip to the Te Mata Peak last evening said that the town presented a wonderful picture from up on the hills. There were hundreds of iires going, he said, and they were visible in all parte of the town, while it was also possible to see the Napier celebrations.
